The generator supports the four classic Chinese writing grids: Tian Zi Ge (田字格, the "field" grid with a center cross), Mi Zi Ge (米字格, with diagonal guidelines), Cross Grid (十字格), and Plain squares (方格). Adjust the number of columns, add blank rows for freehand practice, set trace opacity so learners can copy faded model characters, and pick ink and grid colors that print clearly.

Each square is divided into four quadrants by a dashed cross, which helps learners position the parts of a character correctly and keep proportions balanced. It is the grid used in schools across China and is named after the character 田 ("field"), which the grid resembles.
